Apostille and authentication services for using documents issued by any of the 50 U.S. states or the District of Columbia for use in a foreign country.
Do you need to use a document issued in the United States of America abroad?*
For examples of documents that can be authenticated with a U.S. apostille, click here.
* Documents with apostille are not valid for use anywhere within the United States of America, its territories or possessions. If you are going to use your document in the U.S., please contact the agency that issued the document or your local government authorities to find out how to get these documents certified for use in the U.S.
To use your United States-issued documents in a foreign country, follow these simple steps:
Step 1. Provide details about the document:
- Is the document an original or a certified copy?
- If it is, please proceed to Step 2.
- If it is not an original or certified copy, you will need to obtain one to continue the legalization process.
Step 2. Who issued the document?
- Was it issued by one of the 50 U.S. States or the District of Columbia? Does it have an official stamp or seal?
- If the answer is yes, has your corporate or personal document been signed and notarized by a licensed notary public?
- If it has, then go to Step 3.
- If it has not, you will need to visit a licensed notary public and have them notarize it by signing and stamping your document.
- If your document was not issued by a U.S. state or the District of Columbia, was it issued by the U.S. Federal government? If it was, please go to our U.S. Department of State Apostille page and follow those instructions.
Step 3. Country of destination:
- Confirm that the country you are visiting where you are planning to use the document is on this list.
- If your destination country is on the list, your document requires an apostille. Please proceed to Step 4 and continue following the instructions.
- If your destination country is NOT on the list, your document requires a certification from the U.S. Secretary of State, and may require additional documents. Your document may also need to be legalized by the Embassy or a Consulate of the country you're traveling to. If that is the case, please go to our certification page and follow those instructions.
- If you are not sure, please go to Step 6 or contact us and we’ll be happy to assist.
Step 4. Document Review:
